200 Applications, 3 Replies: Tech Job Hunting Today

Webstarted Academy ·

You sent 80 résumés and got two replies. You’re starting to think the problem is you: your CV, your portfolio, your lack of experience. Before you go further down that road, look at the market numbers — because what’s happening to you is happening to almost everyone.

The numbers

The solidly sourced figure comes from LinkedIn: job seekers now submit roughly twice as many applications as before the pandemic to get the same result. That’s US data, but the dynamics of job boards are the same everywhere: more people competing for every posting.

Community reports paint an even harsher picture for cold applications through job boards: a recurring range of 200 to 400 applications with a 1–3% response rate. Read it for what it is: not a census or a universal constant — a rough sense of what the cold channel yields, not your destiny.

Here’s the point: if you sent 80 cold applications and got two replies, you’re within the expected range for the channel you chose — it’s not a sign that you’re failing. The market cooled down — we covered why, and what’s behind the AI headlines — and that changes the rules of the game: the job search stopped being an errand and became a project.

Treat the search like a project

A project has a system, metrics, and a pace. This is what works today:

1. Track everything. With hundreds of applications in play, memory isn’t enough: which company you applied to, when, with which version of your CV, who replied, when to follow up. A spreadsheet is enough to start; what matters is that the record exists, because what doesn’t get measured gets abandoned.

2. Two tiers of applications, on purpose. Not every opening deserves the same effort. Define a small group of companies where you truly want to be and craft those applications: cover letter, relevant project, company research. For the rest, a solid standard application. What doesn’t work is the middle ground: 300 “somewhat personalized” applications that stand out nowhere.

3. People reply more than forms do. With 1–3% cold response rates, an internal referral is gold. Community, events, former course classmates, that meetup you never attend: that’s where the statistical difference lives. It’s not “having contacts” — it’s building them, and it’s a skill you can train like any other. One concrete shortcut: join the Webstarted Talent Network — instead of applying cold, your profile stays visible to startups hiring LATAM talent.

4. Prepare for the interview before you have one. When a reply comes, it comes fast, and wasting an interview today is extremely expensive. The keys to a great video-call interview still apply, with a new chapter: what to do about AI in technical interviews.

Taking care of yourself is part of the system

A months-long search with 97% silence wears anyone down. Constant rejection isn’t an anecdote: it’s a real burnout risk, and a burned-out candidate interviews worse, which stretches the search, which burns them out more. Break that cycle early: a sustainable pace (applications per week, not marathons), real rest, and someone to talk to about the process.

The message that matters

If you’re in the middle of this: you’re not failing — you’re playing a harder game than the one from five years ago. The people who make it aren’t the ones who send the most CVs; they’re the ones who build a system and sustain it without breaking.
