In today’s work world, technical skills are only part of the success. Juniors in IT, especially those just entering the job market, need to develop a set of soft skills to stand out and thrive in their careers.
One of the most important, and often underestimated, skills is the ability to “read the air” or, as its term says, “Kuuki o Yomu.”
What is Kuuki o Yomu?
Kuuki o Yomu is a Japanese concept that refers to the ability to perceive and understand the atmosphere, grasp social situations, and non-verbal cues in a given situation.
What does this mean? It’s about being perceptive and sensitive to the emotions, needs, and expectations of others, without them being explicitly expressed!
But… why should I know this as a Junior? 👇
It is highly valuable that you know how to adapt to the work environment, be flexible in crucial situations, know how to work in a team, in collaboration, and with good communication; it will happen to you many times that in your work environment (and also in your personal life) certain situations or attitudes occur that are not explained with words or expressed, so… you must be able to read the air! That is, apply the Kuuki o Yomu technique.
This skill will help you:
- Interpret non-verbal cues: for example, capturing the mood of a team, a client’s preferences, or the dynamics of a meeting (even if they are not expressed verbally), identifying a “bad day” of your boss or colleague, interpreting a loud tone of voice or an unusual facial expression, among many more.
- Adjust your behavior: you will identify these situations and know how to act with empathy and respect to avoid making mistakes or causing discomfort.
- Anticipate needs: This skill will allow you to anticipate the needs of your colleagues and clients and thus show yourself with empathy and collaboration to the situation.
Important:
- Kuuki o Yomu is about being perceptive and sensitive to social cues.
- There is no magic formula to develop this skill, but practice and observation are key.
Tips:
🟢 Observe and listen carefully: Pay attention to the facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice of the people you interact with.
🟢 Be aware of the context: Take into account the social and cultural environment you are in, as norms and expectations may vary.
🟢 Develop empathy: Strive to understand the emotions and perspectives of others.
🟢 Ask for feedback: Ask your colleagues and superiors to give you feedback on your communication skills and your behavior in different situations.
Conclusion
The skill of Kuuki o Yomu is an invaluable tool for juniors in IT.
Sometimes it’s not easy to face an uncomfortable or unusual situation, but if you have this tool you will be able to pick up on these signals, interpret them, and develop your best interpersonal version.
